"Put Christ First"

"What Does Jesus Expect from ME?"

Luke 9:57-62 NIV

As they were walking along the road, a man said to him,

"I will follow you wherever you go."

Jesus replied,

"Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."

He said to another man,

"Follow me."

But the man replied,

"Lord, first let me go and bury my father."

Jesus said to him,

"Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."

Still another said,

"I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good bye to my family."

Jesus replied,

"No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."

Luke 14:25-33 NIV

Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:

"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

"Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, 'This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.'

"Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

Christ Jesus told HIS disciples and many others who were listening, what it takes to FOLLOW HIM!

It was a committment of a lifetime that many were unable to make then, and many are unable or unwilling to make even TODAY!

Several times throughout the Gospels, Jesus is recorded as saying;

"Come, follow me!"

Christ made it perfectly clear that HIS suffering was a picture of what HIS followers would endure, if and when they chose to believe HIS Testimony, and then follow HIS example in their lives.

How sad it is to read, that many who heard these WORDs that Jesus spoke, turned back and would not committ to following HIM.

What purpose is there when there is NO PLAN?

What profit is there when there is NO PAIN?

Jesus knew of the suffering first hand, how the world would not accept HIM.

How the world would HATE HIM!

However, Jesus explained that if anyone did follow HIM, they would hate(love less than HIM) their father and mother, brothers and sisters, husband or wife, children and yes, even their own life!

Many of those who had earlier followed HIM, left when they heard these WORDs, yet there were some who continued to follow!

Even some of those who continued to follow and listen to Jesus after this, only looked at the blessings associated with discipleship, but when the persecution and beatings followed, they also turned away and left.

When looking upon the immediate VICTORY of Forgiveness of sin and Salvation from eternal separation, a beautiful and wonderful picture is being painted before our very eyes.

It is only after the oil has dried on the canvas, does the portrait reveal the foretold criticizm and continuing challenge of remaining faithful appear!

Knowing our future temporarily holds suffering, trials and persecutions,

How many TODAY will also turn away and never look back?

As Holy Spirit comforts Believers in Christ, HE also strengthens believers for those days ahead that will be filled with hate and violence. Daring not to follow, after having seen and heard HIS testimony, along with experiencing the miracles and blessings, is not necessarily the kind of future Peter, James and John had doubts about!

These 3 disciples, having witnessed the manifestation of Christ in HIS Glory in the Garden of Gethsemene, were miraculously changed. Power from on HIGH, Holy Spirit, gave them both courage and zeal to remain faithful and obedient to God's calling on their lives.

HIS WORD regarding being HIS disciple is clear;

"anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple."
AND
"any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple."
"No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."

What decision must I make TODAY, if I desire to Faithfully and Obediently

FOLLOW HIM?
