"Before and After!"
The Apostle Paul uses an analogy in these Spirit inspired WORDs, one which depicts the 'Before and After' of a Believer's prayer, where merely speaking intelligible words cannot express my heart's pleadings and supplications in such a way that is sufficient in times of my weakness.
Why would God, in HIS Sovereignty, give me a Voiceless Spirit, when throughout all of scripture, HIS Holy Spirit spoke so clearly of Life, Purpose and Truth?
Paul earlier says,
Christ Jesus spoke quite clearly concerning Holy Spirit to HIS Disciples, and having accepted HIS WORD completely, those disciples received HIS Spirit as the indwelling Presence and Power assigned by God for this purpose, where the 'Before' had only been an excersize in ritual, but without POWER.
Any attempts by those who would frame this 'After' against a backdrop of consistent and inerrant Old Testament teachings, would then also be quilty of ignoring God's VOICE for clarification, where prayer would be as a futile attempt to communicate needs that appear blurred, simply because carnal reasoning would point to a future overridden by hopelessness and defeat.
These WORDs of Paul firmly constitute God's Eternal purpose for which Holy Spirit continually intercedes on behalf of Believers, knowing himself of his own needs that were being met each day by God.
Transformed by the renewing of my mind, every prayer that I utter, whether spoken either in words intelligible to my understanding or by WORDs which only God understands, must then be in complete alignment with HIS Will, and that is a condition that must be clearly and undebateably seen as the assigned WORK of HIS Spirit.
